DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CABOCHON AND FACETED GEMSTONES

We all have seen people using gemstones. Gemstones are available in multiple colors and shapes beneath the earth's surface but they are given a shape by gemstone cutters. But, do you know gemstone cutters follow a few patterns to cut gemstones? Yes, the gemstones are cut in several different cutting patterns but the two patterns that are used the most are cabochon and faceted. The reason behind cutting gemstones in a specific pattern is, cutting these gemstones gives a specific shape, and allows its true color and brilliance to emerge clearly.

Let’s come and understand the main differences between Cabochon and Faceted Gemstones:

Difference Between Cabochon and Faceted Gemstone

Cabochon stone is a dome-shaped stone with a flat bottom that's used since ancient times. Cabochon cut stone India is a very popular gemstone used by the Indian royal families for centuries. Some of the specifications of the cabochon jewelry stones are as follows:

  • All cabochons have a dome-shaped top with a flat base.

  • Some unique cabochons have some natural inclusions and markings.

  • These markings more clearly emerge due to its opaque nature.

Faceted gemstones are cut into a flat top with a pointed bottom. All the faces of these stones are finely polished and are called facets. Faceted gemstones shine more as compared to cabochon stone as they refract light inside the stone and reflect the light from the outside surface. These faceted gemstones generally have 58 facets in common but it can be more or less as per requirements. But having more facets will shine more. These glowing gemstones are mostly used on engagement rings or necklaces.

The major difference between a cabochon cut stone and a faceted stone is opaque gemstones are mostly cut into a cabochon pattern and transparent gemstones are cut into a faceted pattern. The reason why faceted cut is used on transparent gemstones is that if any inclusions or markings will be present inside then it will be difficult for the light to reflect or refract. But, as opaque stones cannot pass light through them, hence cabochon cuts are well suited for them. Both cabochon jewelry and faceted jewelry come in a lot of shapes, sizes, and colors to make them fit in all kinds of jewelry.
